Sporadic, which is the most common form of the disease in the U.S., accounts for 90 to 95 percent of all cases. The remaining 10 percent of ALS cases are inherited through a mutated gene, which is known as familial ALS. ALS occurs in both sexes and all races. I’ll tell them, “I’m tired today” or “I’m sorry, I can’t run with you,” or “I can’t play tag today,” and they get it. It may affect anyone, anywhere. There are no preventive steps either. ALS is 20 percent more common in men than in women.
