Bannerman's death in 1918 (as well as a series of damaging fires) meant that his vision for the castle would never truly be realized and Pollepel Island was eventually abandoned.
Papua-New Guinea has placed the Milne Bay Seascape on its Tentative List but, again, key values are different between the two sites, not least the geomorphological features of the Marovo-Tetepare Complex.
Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre. The mix of oceanic, coral reef, seagrass, estuarine and soft bottom habitats makes Marovo a particularly productive and diverse ecosystem of international significance.
Europeans descended on the islands in the 1800s in order to hunt seals, but the land proved extremely inhospitable and the settlement wasn't able to flourish. It’s reported, though, that hundreds of the mine workers were laborers from Korea who were forced to work here.
Also within the region lies the New Caledonian barrier reef, the second longest double barrier reef in the world, at 1,500 kilometres. There are major differences in the terrestrial biota and the vegetation has affinities with sub-tropical and temperate rain forests in Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia. Settlers are thought to have been here as early as the Bronze Age and the island was also later owned by the Benedictine monks of San Giorgio Maggiore. The complex consists of large stone walls and the remains of churches and altars. The island boasted mansions and churches, plus a power station allowing residents to live in relative luxury. In addition to the intact forest ecosystems on the large islands of Vangunu and Tetepare, the chain of small double barrier islands that surround the eastern portion of the Marovo-Tetepare Complex also support extensive rainforest, increasing the ecological and landscape diversity, and biodiversity values, of the property. Traditional practices needs to be further developed, but instead we will work together to lay out the best plan. The entire island is protected from commercial resource extraction but low levels of artisanal resource use by local villagers are allowed in some areas. This long, rugged island, cloaked in rainforest and fringed with biodiverse reefs, is the largest uninhabited tropical island in the Southern Hemisphere. It remains one of the last unlogged areas of lowland rainforest in the New Georgia group and the wider Solomon Islands. It’s also known as Plague Island because in the late 1700s and early 1800s it was used to quarantine plague victims. It encompasses a complete island ecosystem of primary lowland rainforest on the island of Tetepare, including all features that are necessary to sustain ecosystem functioning.
Hirta is the largest island in the remote St Kilda archipelago, a string of Scottish isles at the far edge of the Outer Hebrides. Today the island has no human inhabitants and is populated instead with seabirds, penguins and several species of seal. The island is also home to the well-preserved remains of a Christian monastic settlement thought to date back to the 6th century. The colony remained in operation until 1957, following the discovery of a treatment for the disease in the 1940s. Although Henderson, like Tetepare, is uninhabited Tetepare is significantly different in terms of vegetation structure, endemics, its cultural history, and its important functional linkages to surrounding areas on the southwest coastal areas of Rendova, the Hele Islands, Vangunu and Gatokae Islands. Closer to the Solomon Islands are the existing WH sites of the Lord Howe Group (LHG) and the Great Barrier Reef.
However, it's also rumored that the final lighthouse keeper was killed by the vipers and the island has remained free of humans ever since. A Rapid Ecological Assessment conducted by The Nature Conservancy (TNC) in 2004 resulted in its inclusion in the Coral Triangle - global centre of marine biodiversity. In the 1920s, a psychiatric hospital was opened on the island and rumor has it that one evil doctor tortured and murdered patients. Property names are listed in the language in which they have been submitted by the State Party. Today, the eerie hospital building still stands and the entire island is off limits to the public. Encompassing some of the best examples of all the Pacific biomes - coral reefs, estuarine and island complexes, mangrove forests, and sea grass beds, as well as a great diversity of forests types including montane forests and some of the last remaining tracts of lowland rainforest, the area is home to globally outstanding marine biodiversity.
