Desolation Sound, Part 2: Waterfall quest. We nestled here for a few cozy nights, spending our days hiking, swimming, and toying about in the dinghy during lazy afternoons. The bays are filled with salmon, the skies with great blue herons, bald eagles, loons, ravens, osprey, and assorted waterfowl.

Ours was a perfect Pacific Northwest charter. Kenmore Air, based in Seattle, provides coastal float-plane service to the entire Pacific Northwest region. Water! 1 Toba Inlet, north of Desolation Sound, is known for its emerald or jade green waters and many waterfalls (particularly in late spring and early summer). It is an area of huge mountains and wilderness with little civilization and untouched cruising grounds.
The waters teem with salmon and are wedged with rapids and whitewater tidal rips. Grizzlies stalk the shoreline; in the distance, on the mainland, lie the 6,000- to 10,000-foot peaks of the Coast Mountains.

Despite plans for adventurous odysseys, they often get sidetracked by the siren song of Desolation Sound’s multitude of hidden coves, and before they know it, they’ve passed an entire summer there. There is no scheduled ferry service to Desolation Sound so if travelling by boat, you'll need your own, or hire a water taxi from Campbell River (on Vancouver Island) or Lund on the Sunshine Coast. The arrival of a de Havilland Beaver float plane gliding to a halt on a glassy inlet and delivering passengers to a charter yacht became a familiar sight for us during our trip.

We all felt that way during our time in Desolation Sound: safe, content, and full of easy-going adventures.

Every inlet in summer is calm, filled with a few soft breezes at sunset and only rarely a squall, and even then there’s little fetch to build any size of sea. There are four lakes and a waterfall in Desolation Sound Marine Park.
