Mr. Phillips goes into more details than Mr. Reich ("Grow Fruit Naturally") and I like that--more of the "why's" instead of just the "do's". Yet this can also be challenging, because few people today have the depth of knowledge and experience that’s needed to produce healthy trees and nutritious, great-tasting fruit.

This change in terminology also changes my attitude about the tree care. Spraying isn't only a chore, but a hated one. Permaculture and food forests are popular buzzwords, but it is annoying how much revolves around weekend seminars, which are expensive and time consuming. This is a practical book and it is worth the cost for what I have learned so far. I am in zone 5 USA, warm summers and freezing winters. Everything is in here from grafting and choosing varieties to pest and disease control. I think many wonderful points are made.

Every farm and homestead can enjoy the timeless pleasure of a fruit orchard. Mr. Phillips also has a "folksy" style that I found to be distracting. Having read every book I could find on organic orchards keeping, I had almost given up on ever raising non-toxic fruit on the East coast. I am a new peach orchard owner and consider this my most valuable resource. The Holistic Orchard DVD guides viewers on a highly informative and visually stimulating tour through a year in the orchard. While it's accessible, Phillips isn't afraid to get down in the dirt and go for technical biological details.
