If you liked this and are interested in books about loners and oddballs, I’d strongly recommend The Rosie Project. This character will stay with me for a long time. While there were so many things I loved about this book, I just found the book a little stereotypical, I guess? The book was a lot longer than it needed to be, and while this book didn’t focus on plot, I did find myself occasionally checking how much I had left to read, which is never a good sign for a book lover! There are so many sad and isolated folk in our societies and this author has painted a picture of such a person. I loved this book and wish it did not end. This is not to say there’s nothing to be gained from this empathetically-told story — I think everyone could use a reminder to have patience with the lonely oddballs out there. The book was well worth the read! I enjoyed the two main characters in this book and thought Honeyman captured their personalities really well. The story was both dark and inspirational, fun yet emotional. I laughed, cried and enjoyed all the awkward situations. Things begin to come through as the reader finds out more about Eleanor, and towards the end of the book her past life threatens to envelope her completely. . . Sorry it didn’t live up to the hype for you. ELEANOR OLIPHANT IS COMPLETELY FINE. It’s a book about loneliness, isolation and a need for connection that can ring true to many people, including those who don’t suffer to quite the same degree as this protagonist. Nevertheless Eleanor is a great character and you’ve captured her perfectly here! I also liked this book but like you say, it’s a little longer than it needed to be and quite predictable. While this has made her lonesome and unhappy at times, she is also self-sufficient, in a no nonsense way which is funny and endearing to read. The book has been very well received (Reese Witherspoon bought the film rights), and I can understand why — it’s one that many people can find something to like about if they allow themselves and suspend their disbelief. I knew you and I would love this book. I read this book over the summer, but I’ve only just had chance to review it on here.

I saw bits of Eleanor in myself and other people I know. It has now been over two weeks since I finished this novel and it is still haunting me. You know I didn’t like this book, but I took your advice and picked up the audio book, and it was still just OK to me. I can relate to so many of the points you make here. Eleanor Oliphant (Ms) may well be completely fine but the entire book was completely excellent. It’d add the caveat, however, that this requires a fair amount of suspension of disbelief in order to enjoy. I’m not sure this book was a good fit for me, honestly.
