Short documentary by Gaspar Noé filmed around the the same time as Irréversible (in 16mm Scope), in which his friend Stéphane Drouot – director of the cult film Star Suburb – discusses life with AIDS and his struggles to make films. Saw it on the big screen at the Vancouver International Film Centre. Of course there is self-indulgence and sequences I wish he cut in half (such as the overhead long take) but that's Noé... it comes with the territory. A disturbing opening shot of a woman struggling and appearing to die in the snow is followed by young dancers’ quick testimonials about their love for what they do, and then by a unique title card: “A French film and proud of it.”.
The heaven of the film’s first half becomes hell in the second, and much of this is seen through the ordeal suffered by a young woman played with wrenching intensity by Sofia Boutella.
